The real life of an airline pilot is often far removed from the public image of a glamorous superhero. Vesa Turpeinen suggests that most of the time they are just human, but sketches an unconventional and highly amusing scenario in FunkyPilot Journals. The author describes the adventures and misadventures of a mythical Captain Jack Williams, who talks to airplanes following an accident, and his luckless colleague, Lando Harris. The situations include everything from bird strikes and engine fires while in flight to navigating dull routines interspersed with emergencies. It features cockpit banter, careers going nowhere, fatigue, and an endless procession of hotels of variable quality for overnight stays. Childhood ambitions are contrasted with the adult reality of punishing flight schedules, daily stress, leave cancelled at short notice, and missed promotions. After a heroic crash landing, Jack hears airplanes talking. He is grounded for a medical assessment, undergoes therapy, and acquires a talking pig named Sherman. It seems that a mid-air emergency is not without humor, as Jack struggles to adapt to his surreal new reality. In between, he mentors the neighborhood children who are keen to become pilots.

FunkyPilot Journals is based on a comic book, but provides a light-hearted look at aviation, adding much more depth and outlining the steps needed to become a pilot. Aviate, navigate, and communicate are the watchwords, but at times, this is easier said than done. Despite the chaos and humor, there are lessons in this book that can be applied in life. The importance of mental health, coping with success, failure, and recovery are debated, as is the need to be honest and willing to learn. The writing style is suitably tongue-in-cheek. Vesa Turpeinen, himself an accomplished airline pilot and instructor, injects humour into flying, describing some hilarious situations that will raise a smile. Chapter summaries enhance the read, as do the quirky cartoons. Technical terms are explained in the endnotes for those readers looking to expand their knowledge of aviation. The book will appeal to a wide audience, both young and old, as well as aviation enthusiasts like myself. It will prove inspirational to aspiring aviators and change the way they think about flying. This is the first of a series, and the sequel is eagerly awaited.

FunkyPilot Journals: A Pilot’s Journey from Flight Deck Chaos to A Highly Questionable Flight School by Vesa Turpeinen is a fun, comedic, and insightful look into the world of aviation. Captain Jack Williams and his first officer, Lando Harris, have great chemistry flying together. Unfortunately, something happens that results in Lando blaming Jack for him missing out on a promotion to Captain status. Moreover, shortly after finding out that he will not be promoted, they are on a disrupted flight together. Both engines die, and they are forced to turn around and make an emergency landing. This experience leaves Jack with PTSD, and Lando bitter that he is suspended from flying. Jack has more time to interact with some neighborhood kids who are very interested in becoming pilots. However, what is happening with Lando?

I enjoyed reading FunkyPilot Journals by Vesa Turpeinen. This is the first book in a series inspired by the FunkyPilot Academy comic universe, so I appreciated that every chapter started with a funny, illustrated comic page. I also enjoyed the character-driven plot. It was interesting to learn more about pilots by focusing on Jack and Lando, as they are both in different stages of the same career. The captain’s learning logs at the end of each chapter were also very educational. Vesa does a great job of pacing the story. However, I was surprised by Sherman, the talking pig. He was introduced very late in the story, but most characters seemed to accept this abnormality easily. The characters were well-developed and entertaining. I highly recommend FunkyPilot Journals to everyone, especially aviation enthusiasts.

FunkyPilot Journals Book 1: A Pilot’s Journey from Flight Deck Chaos to a Highly Questionable Flight School by Vesa Turpeinen follows airline pilot Jack Williams as he navigates the unpredictable life of aviation, with long hours, strange travel, and unexpected situations. The story begins in a cockpit where monotony and responsibility coexist. Jack, an experienced captain, questions his career, which once seemed adventurous but now feels mechanical and exhausting. The book explores airline life through episodes in flights, crew lounges, hotel layovers, and training. Readers meet Jack’s energetic first officer, Lando Harris, a younger pilot who still finds the magic in flying, contrasting his experience with Jack's. The narrative mixes humorous mishaps with moments of insight.

Vesa Turpeinen blends humor with observations about aviation, creating a narrative that moves quickly while offering glimpses into the technical world of pilots. Turpeinen writes with an informal voice that mirrors conversations heard in crew lounges or cockpit exchanges. Scenes alternate between action, dialogue, and short explanatory segments that describe aviation concepts in clear language. The pacing moves briskly from one situation to another, reflecting the stop-and-go pattern of airline schedules where long stretches of routine can suddenly give way to unusual events. The characters are drawn through their reactions to everyday challenges, whether dealing with difficult schedules, quirky passengers, or the strange logistics of airline travel. FunkyPilot Journals Book 1 offers illustrated “Captain’s Learning Log” sections that add an educational element. Readers will find pages of resources at the end of this engaging, exceptionally well-written book.

FunkyPilot Journals by Vesa Turpeinen is a hilarious and educational story that follows Captain Jack Williams, a pilot with loads of experience and a love for aviation. He has a great co-pilot and enjoys teaching even the naughty neighborhood kids about aircraft and flying. Unfortunately, flying his usual route over Kazakhstan started to be exhausting, as did dealing with anxious passengers. To compound his problems, his plane encounters a bird strike with quite an unusual kind of goose. Even though he and his co-pilot managed to glide the plane to safety, the whole incident ended in a disaster. Everyone sees him arguing with the plane, and he has to attend therapy. Just when he thinks everything is over for him, he discovers he still has a chance to be in the aviation industry and make a difference in many people’s lives.

FunkyPilot Journals is the first book following the adventures of Captain Jack. It is written as a fictional memoir that combines comedy with aviation education to entertain and inform readers about the world of flying. Vesa Turpeinen has included lessons on flight procedures, the importance of safety, and why pilots are encouraged to rest and have mental evaluations. The author does not use difficult technical terms but uses simple language that any reader can understand. This story is unpredictable, with genetically modified geese, talking planes and animals, and references to movies like Top Gun. The story has some things that I have never thought about, like how pilots deal with passengers and how much responsibility they have with each flight. The story explains the difficulties that airline pilots have, like pilot shortages, and how the aviation industry is a community that allows for camaraderie and learning. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as it is a very valuable resource and inspiration for aspiring pilots and those interested in learning what goes on behind the cockpit door.

FunkyPilot Journals by Vesa Turpeinen tells the story of Captain Jack Williams, an experienced yet burned-out airline pilot who is forced to glide his jet into a terminal after a dual engine failure. This incident grounds him psychologically as he begins to blame himself for forgetting the parking brakes, and now he hallucinates about a talking airplane. Meanwhile, his first officer, Lando, misses a long-coveted promotion because Jack forgot to submit his letter of recommendation. This results in resentment among the crew. Jack is subjected to mandatory therapy, and in the process, he discovers his passion for teaching aviation to neighborhood kids. His assistant is a pig named Sherman. Can this lead to healing, and can Lando overcome his grievances against Jack and find his path?

This was an incredible read for me, and it was fun to follow the characters, from Captain Jack to the bubbly kids and the pig. Vesa Turpeinen made me understand what fatigue can do to a pilot, and the exploration of Jack's psyche reminded me of the movie Sully. The novel's psychological underpinnings are exceptionally well executed, and the characters, including the pig, are utterly relatable and believable. There is plenty of humor in this book, but what makes it a unique read is the lessons woven into the writing. The author made me understand that some of the most important lessons about aviation take place outside the cockpit, in real-life, ordinary experiences. FunkyPilot Journals melds aviation accuracy with humor to crown the entertainment. The internal conflict is exemplified in Jack’s hallucinations. I enjoyed how the author bridges fiction and reality for aviation fans, and the satire focuses on airline bureaucracy.
