The real life of an airline pilot is often far removed from the public image of a glamorous superhero. Vesa Turpeinen suggests that most of the time they are just human, but sketches an unconventional and highly amusing scenario in FunkyPilot Journals. The author describes the adventures and misadventures of a mythical Captain Jack Williams, who talks to airplanes following an accident, and his luckless colleague, Lando Harris. The situations include everything from bird strikes and engine fires while in flight to navigating dull routines interspersed with emergencies. It features cockpit banter, careers going nowhere, fatigue, and an endless procession of hotels of variable quality for overnight stays. Childhood ambitions are contrasted with the adult reality of punishing flight schedules, daily stress, leave cancelled at short notice, and missed promotions. After a heroic crash landing, Jack hears airplanes talking. He is grounded for a medical assessment, undergoes therapy, and acquires a talking pig named Sherman. It seems that a mid-air emergency is not without humor, as Jack struggles to adapt to his surreal new reality. In between, he mentors the neighborhood children who are keen to become pilots.
FunkyPilot Journals is based on a comic book, but provides a light-hearted look at aviation, adding much more depth and outlining the steps needed to become a pilot. Aviate, navigate, and communicate are the watchwords, but at times, this is easier said than done. Despite the chaos and humor, there are lessons in this book that can be applied in life. The importance of mental health, coping with success, failure, and recovery are debated, as is the need to be honest and willing to learn. The writing style is suitably tongue-in-cheek. Vesa Turpeinen, himself an accomplished airline pilot and instructor, injects humour into flying, describing some hilarious situations that will raise a smile. Chapter summaries enhance the read, as do the quirky cartoons. Technical terms are explained in the endnotes for those readers looking to expand their knowledge of aviation. The book will appeal to a wide audience, both young and old, as well as aviation enthusiasts like myself. It will prove inspirational to aspiring aviators and change the way they think about flying. This is the first of a series, and the sequel is eagerly awaited.
