In Cuckoo and the Destiny by Audifac Ignace, a wildfire sweeps through the Fembreh Savannah, sending animals fleeing in every direction. Amid the chaos, young Moni—a pregnant cuckoo bird—decides to leave despite the pleas of her mother, Kima. Kima warns of the many dangers that await Moni, from possibly ending up in a boiling pot in Asia to falling into traps in Australia. But Moni’s determination proves unshakable. With no choice but to let her daughter go, Kima gives Moni a parting gift: a heartfelt song and a reminder that the sky is her best friend, a symbol of freedom and resilience she can carry wherever she goes.
Not only has Audifac Ignace created a wonderful tale, but Scot Mmobuosi’s stunning illustrations elevate this emotional story. It brings warmth, motion, and heart to every page. The lush visuals pair beautifully with the text, capturing the urgency of the fire and the tenderness between Moni and Kima. The story’s pacing is gentle but powerful, building empathy for the characters while delivering a timeless message about bravery, growth, and letting go. Young readers will be captivated by Moni’s spirit and comforted by the loving bond between mother and daughter. Fans of The Gruffalo or Last Stop on Market Street will find a similar blend of lyrical storytelling, visual beauty, and emotional depth in this moving tale. This is only the beginning of Cuckoo and the Destiny. It's well worth the wait to see how it continues.
