Leslie Storch’s life changed three years ago after learning about Adrian Lamo, a famous hacker, in one of his high school classes. All he had wanted since then was to be like Lamo, who instantly became his idol, and he set out to learn the art of hacking. It takes time to find his way around the dark web, rack up a few victories to his name, and even attend a hackers’ event in New York City. He nicknames himself Thorn and decides to join an elite group of hackers called the Penetrators. However, the group only accepts hackers whose exploits have grabbed the nation’s attention. Determined to be part of the Penetrators, Leslie slowly unleashes cyber attacks on various events in New Jersey and New York City, each catching the attention of Cyber Security Agency (CSA) investigator Persephone “Seph” Carano. Leslie’s next move will be big. Can Seph get to him before he strikes? Find out in Cyber Case Thorn by Ken Tentarelli.
If you are looking for a cybercrime novel flavored with mystery, thrills, a splash of drama, and suspense, Cyber Case Thorn by Ken Tentarelli is a worthy pick. Using vivid imagery and fast-paced prose, Tentarelli drops readers into the middle of all the action on the East Coast, introducing them to fascinating characters. I was either following Leslie, plotting and attacking his targets, or Agent Carano stealthily pursuing his digital trail. The two highlight the realities of life for a hacker and a CSA investigator. I could feel the pressure Seph was under, especially after the Vice President’s incident. I could also see her struggle to balance her work and private life. I learned important details about hacking from Leslie, which I believe hacking enthusiasts will appreciate. The details of hacking procedures and the dynamics of investigative operations were believable and enlightening. The story’s message is that while hacking may be an exciting venture, the authorities will always catch up with you, and the price to be paid is dear. This short read is an enthralling debut in The Cyber Case Series.
