Daddy Is Amazing Like That by Mary Anne McMahon and Jennifer Bucciero Boyles is a picture book for children. One day, siblings Rachael and Laura are having a conversation about Rachael’s missing lunch. Laura explains that their pets were the culprits, but she was to blame for the missing banana that she was currently eating. Laura explains that she wanted a funny story for her dad to tell at his comedy night. Their dad was in a wheelchair and had joined many different disability-friendly groups to help him through the changes he was experiencing. Later on, Laura tells her dad about school and how the girls there are different now, and she struggles to get on with them due to feeling different. Her father responds with useful and uplifting advice. Laura learns a lot from her father throughout the story, and he equips her with the tools to navigate school. What did Laura learn from her father?
Daddy Is Amazing Like That by Mary Anne McMahon and Jennifer Bucciero Boyles was a pleasure to read. I absolutely loved every word. It is full of great advice that will make children feel more confident in themselves, and just like the characters, they also will be able to navigate through the difficult situations they encounter as they grow older. I love that the main focus lesson is about showing how disabilities don’t necessarily mean you are restricted from doing normal, everyday things. This packed a punch as a reader, so I know the book will have a huge impact on anyone else reading it. The illustrations by Eleonora D’Amico are adorable and help bring the characters alive. Great work to everyone involved in creating this wonderful book.
