Dark Town: Level One of the Dragon's Crawl by Palmer Pickering is a fantasy novel from the LitRPG subgenre. Hidden beneath the quiet town of Haverly Arms lies an entrance to the Dragon’s Game, a labyrinthine world where adventurers risk everything to claim powerful objects and advance to the next level. Temerity has watched her father and brothers disappear into the game for years, leaving her, her mother, and their mischievous house goblin, Half-pint, to run the family tavern. But when small-town life grows too dull, Temerity takes the plunge into Level One: Dark Town, where danger, strategy, and thrilling challenges await.

Author Palmer Pickering has a clear enthusiasm for the fantasy RPG world that comes through in the warmth and energy of the narrative, and this makes for a truly inventive and immersive LitRPG adventure that blends cozy charm easily with high-stakes battle action. The description goes beyond the cinematic to the total involvement of all the senses. Pickering’s world-building is top-notch, making Dark Town a game world that I immediately want to step into and play, figuring out my strategies. The characters we follow have plenty of skills for this too, though, and they’re fully fleshed out in their own right for some zippy dialogue and great humor. I thought that Temerity was especially well-rounded, with an authentic attitude that felt genuinely born right out of the world itself, and she is a bold and refreshing protagonist who makes every moment of this journey unforgettable. Overall, Dark Town is a highly recommend read for fans of the LitRPG genre and is an exemplary work of how it should be done.
