Author Biography

Along with writing fantasy, M.L. Spencer teaches science at the high school she graduated from. She is just as interested in science as she is in fantasy. Her knowledge of both biology and general science helps her with world building and also helps keep her writing grounded, adding a dash of scientific skepticism to the fantasy worlds she creates.

Swearing allegiance to a higher purpose is easy until your principles are put to the ultimate test. In Darkmage: The Rhenwars Saga Volume 2 by M.L. Spencer that is exactly what Darien Lachlin is called upon to do. Summoned to Aerysius, the seat of the authority of the mages, Darien is forced to accept the burden of becoming a Master to help protect the homeland from a growing threat. Little does anyone realize the threat is already upon them as Aidan Lachlin opens the well of souls, releasing the powers of the Netherworld. Darien shoulders the responsibility and returns to Greystone Keep, the farthest outpost guarding the kingdom, to try to prevent the enemy from overrunning the south. With the help of Kyel Archer, an unsuspecting prisoner turned Acolyte, Darien brings together the armies of Chamsbrey and Emmery to help him defeat the evil. Unfortunately, he must break his solemn vow, the Oath of Harmony, and inflict incredible destruction before attempting to shut down the opening to the Netherworld. Will Darien have to make the ultimate sacrifice or is there some secret that will help him and Kyel close the portal and end the reign of terror?

Darkmage: The Rhenwars Saga Volume 2 is a masterful story with incredible depth of emotion, non-stop action, and tremendous questions about when to set your principles aside for the greater good. All of the characters are well developed and interact realistically in a broad array of circumstances that challenge the bounds of friendship and love. As a true epic, Darkmage demands an emotional investment and leaves you with plenty of questions since the characters are fully invested in their paths and pull at your heartstrings as they face their own personal demons. I reviewed Dark Storm (Volume 1) and loved it and this volume is even better! It is amazing how the author has taken something so sad and turned it into a beautiful gift for the future. This is an excellent story that fills you with despair, hope, and the desire to make the world a better place.

Wow! That's exactly what I thought when I finished reading the absolutely fantastic new book by author M.L. Spencer, Darkmage: The Rhenwars Saga, Volume 2. This book grabbed me by the throat from the very first page and would not let me go until the very end. Following the story of Darien Lauchlin, a mage bound by the rules set forth by the Oath of Harmony, readers will find themselves deeply invested in the lands so brilliantly created by author M.L. Spencer. Darien struggles to find peace for his homeland, and knows he is the only sentinel mage left that can do it. But while he's moving towards his quest, will he also lose his soul? You'll have to read the book to find out.

I loved Darkmage. Loved. It. How's that for a review? Author M.L. Spencer has done an absolutely amazing job in this series, and this volume will not disappoint avid fans. I picked up Darkmage, planning to read only a few chapters before going to bed. Well, instead I found myself awake to all hours, before satisfyingly closing my eyes after reading the last words. Any reader who enjoys fantasy fiction should absolutely read this book, and any lover of simply great and creative writing should as well. I highly recommend Darkmage: The Rhenwars Saga, Volume 2, and certainly hope that author M.L. Spencer is hard at work on the next installment. I, for one, will be in line to read it as soon as it is released!

To safeguard their kingdom, all mages of Aerysius are charged with an Oath of Harmony, binding them with a strict code of pacifism. However, their ancient enemy is released into their world once again, with the help of a rogue mage. Darien Lauchlin, a mage bound by the Oath of Harmony, is the only one who can save his homeland – that is if he’s ready to abandon his oath.

Darkmage (The Rhenwars Saga, Volume 2) by M.L. Spencer is a superbly evocative and descriptive dark epic fantasy for YA and adult readers alike. One of the strengths of the story that stands out for me is the morality in the plot that is not overshadowed by its fantasy aspect. Strong characterization adds depth to the story. Darien Lauchlin is an intriguing protagonist who struggles between his loyalty to honor the Oath of Harmony and his desire to gain power and destroy the enemy.

All in all, Darkmage is an unexpected gem for me. This is an excellent, well-written story. Even though this is the second installment in the series, the story is solid as a standalone. Spencer deftly pens her evocative prose that resonates with readers, making Darkmage the kind of book that you want to stay up long nights reading. To read it is to be there in the tumultuous magical world that Spencer created. Readers will love and immerse themselves in the moral struggle, family conflict, imagery, and the adventure. This is a fantastic series that fantasy fans wouldn’t want to miss.
