Swearing allegiance to a higher purpose is easy until your principles are put to the ultimate test. In Darkmage: The Rhenwars Saga Volume 2 by M.L. Spencer that is exactly what Darien Lachlin is called upon to do. Summoned to Aerysius, the seat of the authority of the mages, Darien is forced to accept the burden of becoming a Master to help protect the homeland from a growing threat. Little does anyone realize the threat is already upon them as Aidan Lachlin opens the well of souls, releasing the powers of the Netherworld. Darien shoulders the responsibility and returns to Greystone Keep, the farthest outpost guarding the kingdom, to try to prevent the enemy from overrunning the south. With the help of Kyel Archer, an unsuspecting prisoner turned Acolyte, Darien brings together the armies of Chamsbrey and Emmery to help him defeat the evil. Unfortunately, he must break his solemn vow, the Oath of Harmony, and inflict incredible destruction before attempting to shut down the opening to the Netherworld. Will Darien have to make the ultimate sacrifice or is there some secret that will help him and Kyel close the portal and end the reign of terror?
Darkmage: The Rhenwars Saga Volume 2 is a masterful story with incredible depth of emotion, non-stop action, and tremendous questions about when to set your principles aside for the greater good. All of the characters are well developed and interact realistically in a broad array of circumstances that challenge the bounds of friendship and love. As a true epic, Darkmage demands an emotional investment and leaves you with plenty of questions since the characters are fully invested in their paths and pull at your heartstrings as they face their own personal demons. I reviewed Dark Storm (Volume 1) and loved it and this volume is even better! It is amazing how the author has taken something so sad and turned it into a beautiful gift for the future. This is an excellent story that fills you with despair, hope, and the desire to make the world a better place.
