Dash and Victoria Find True Love by Vicki Tashman is a story about the bond between a spaniel dog named Dash and his owner, who just happens to be Victoria, the future Queen of England. The story is told from the perspective of Dash, who truly adores his owner. Dash and Victoria have quite the life together, reading, playing and cuddling. Though Dash and Victoria are as close as pet and owner could be, Victoria also has several other pets, including Lory the colorful parrot and Islay the grumpy gray terrier, who also share their own special bonds with Victoria. Oftentimes, Dash becomes jealous of the other animals and humans whom Victoria spends time with, growling at them. One day, when Victoria meets Prince Albert, Dash knows that things are about to change just by the way the two look at each other. So when the two head out for an afternoon together, Dash follows them but unexpectedly gets into trouble when he gets caught in a trap. What will happen to Dash?

Dash and Victoria Find True Love is a charming and heartwarming story with whimsical illustrations. I especially loved how the author provided historical facts about the Victorian era at the end of the book, which makes history accessible to kids of all ages and opens a post-book discussion. Additionally, by telling the story from the perspective of the dog, young readers can understand the raw emotions that he feels – love, jealousy, anger, fear. While on the surface, the story is about the bond between a pet and his owner, it also has a deeper meaning about friendship, sharing and opening up your heart to others. I would recommend this book to elementary school-aged children.
