Brian Lutterman's Deadfall: A Pen Wilkinson Novel is a suspense thriller whose main character Pen Wilkinson is a young attorney and a paraplegic. She lives in Long Beach, California, and is currently recovering from PTSD, a result of risky and dangerous investigations for the US Department of Justice. She accepts a temporary assignment by the Department of Justice and the FBI to work undercover at DSI, a defense contractor in Newport Beach. Keri Wylie, a young corporate attorney at DSI, has been murdered. Pen's assignment is to find information about who killed Keri Wylie and why. Under the assumed name of Desiree or Dez Walker, Pen gets hired as a paralegal at DSI. The story's tension ratchets up as Pen uncovers incriminating information, putting her own life at risk.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Brian Lutterman's Deadfall for its sharp and incredibly courageous principal character, attorney Pen Wilkinson. I liked her independent thinking, her ability to sift through information and clues and act decisively and quickly when the going gets rough. She does not give up easily. Risking her own life, she is determined to find who killed DSI attorney Keri Wyler and why. I liked the gradual revelation of the other characters in the story and their motivations. As Pen follows seemingly unrelated clues, the formidable and chilling nature of her adversaries emerges. I found myself riveted as the action and pace picked up. Pen uncovers a tangled web involving murder, defense contractors, security leaks, espionage, fraud, and greed. The story twists and turns, right to the end. An excellent read, well-crafted, taut; an action-packed suspense thriller!
