Dear Sun, Dear Moon is a children’s book written by Deborah Paggi and illustrated by Gayle Cole. Written alternately with the sun and the moon singing each other’s praises in turn (by way of a letter), both the sun's and the moon’s positive attributes are brought to light. The sun is praised for starting each day by waking all forms of life, both animal and plant, while the moon is praised for the brilliance of its glow at night, enabling animals to see and forage for food and seek shelter. Without the sun’s warmth, life would cease to exist. The oceans’ waters have temperature control due to the rays of the sun. Because of the moon, the levels of the oceans rise and fall each day. The sun guides and aligns the planets, while signaling the different seasons to those on Earth. Although lonely, being so far away from each other, the sun and moon rejoice at the time of the eclipse when they are joined as one, combining their energies and turning day into night.
What a wonderful read! I am overjoyed by Deborah Paggi’s and Gayle Cole’s insights, with the power and beauty of the sun and the moon so beautifully described in such a clever format. With climate change being refuted so much around the world, it is important to shine a light on how the sun and moon affect our planet in so many different ways. Not only are the temperatures, amounts of light and seasons dictated by these two important celestial globes, but they also manage to co-exist without causing devastation to one another. Nature is fragile and precious, fascinating not only me (as a Pagan), but also our ancestors from thousands of years ago, with the Gods and Goddesses carrying different aspects of the planets and the elements that they control – especially that of the sun and the moon. I very much enjoyed how the illustrations so beautifully brought each of these letters to life, and recommend Dear Sun, Dear Moon to young readers between the ages of 3 and 7, so that they can appreciate day and night in bigger ways than just being light and dark.
