Blood of the Founding by B.A. Chapman is a paranormal romance with a bite to it. Dr. Elena Vance, PhD, works at the Jeffersonian researching obsolete Eastern European cultures, but something strange is happening to her. She thinks she might be turning into a wolf. It’s nothing big, to start with. An odd growl, shedding hair, and a sudden hunger for raw meat. Then her adoptive parents give her a letter from her birth mother, who gave her up. The letter is centuries old, and it sends Elena and her best friend, Riley, on a journey into the Carpathians in search of answers. They arrive at a remote village where everyone recognizes her and tells her she’s meant to be dead. She isn’t, and what she finds out about herself is about to start a war with a villain who will stop at nothing to bring her down. Elena doesn’t have long to master her powers if she wants to survive, but the added distraction of an alpha who wants to protect her isn’t making life easy for her. She wanted to know who she was; in Romania, she finds more than she bargained for.

Blood of the Founding by B.A. Chapman is a slow-burning, steamy romance with a side of danger and a whole heap of trouble. It’s written with confidence and plenty of humor; the opening scene with the Roomba starts things light before they descend into darkness. You’ll find the characters easy to like. Elena is a sharp, self-aware character, and her and Riley’s relationship sets the emotional tone, at least for the first half. The rest of the main characters are well-developed individuals, each bringing something special to the story, but the villain is by far the strongest character. A quiet-spoken, patient man, he’s dangerous and cruel, a real match for Elena. This isn’t a quick read, and it’s definitely for adults. The first half is about setting the scene and building up the characters, leading them into an action-packed second half that will keep you reading until the end. If you enjoy werewolf romances and stories that build up the tension gradually, this is the book for you, with a satisfying ending that is well worth the wait.

In Blood of the Founding by B.A. Chapman, we join Dr. Elena Vance on her journey to find out more about her origin. Elena is a respected museum researcher, but her life unravels when she experiences physical and psychological changes. Elena was adopted, and strange symptoms force her to find answers about her biological family. Elena’s adoptive parents reveal that they have kept a mysterious centuries-old parchment, written in an unknown language, safe for her. The parchment is an ancient prophecy about a "hidden daughter" in Romania. Elena, Dr. Arthur Sterling, and her best friend, Riley Chen, embark on their journey to find the truth. Elena finds herself in the middle of ancient enemies and long-kept secrets. Elena must decide whether to embrace her fate or reject the future others have chosen for her.

Blood of the Founding by B.A. had me hooked from the first page until the last. I could not turn the pages fast enough to find out what happened next. The chapters flowed seamlessly into each other, without distracting me. The characters were authentic despite their supernatural side. Elena struggles to accept her transformation, and this makes her believable. Riley's character lightened the tension with humor. I could not wait to see where the romance would lead. With the vivid descriptions of Romania, it was easy to visualize the landscape and become part of the story. The book was beautifully written and is an outstanding debut. I enjoyed reading this book, and it exceeded my expectations.

B.A. Chapman’s Blood of the Founding introduces Dr. Elena Vance, a PhD holder and a sharp-eyed museum conservator who thinks she is losing her mind when she starts craving raw meat and growling at her vacuum cleaner, Roomba. Now, a prophecy, an ancient wolf named Vasilica, and a trip to an isolated Carpathian village reveal the truth: Elena is the truth-reading werewolf and the last strigă. As she bonds with Lucian Vaduva, the pack’s guarded alpha, and her human friend, Riley, she learns she has been hidden for a reason, and it is Andrei Aldea. Andrei is the ninth line, and the wolf who learned to lie in such a way that his cunning has hunted its own blood to the edge of extinction. He has spent thousands of years making sure that Elena’s family dies in the shadows. As the Blood Dawn approaches, Elena must descend into the heart of the mountain to awaken an imprisoned power and face a loneliness older than the world itself.

In Blood of the Founding, B.A. Chapman creates unforgettable characters, and Elena’s scholarly poise and quest to uncover her identity made her utterly memorable. Lucian’s centuries-buried tenderness begins to surface after meeting Elena, and I was heavily invested in their romance, which grows at a speed that makes the story suspenseful. The author taunts, gives hints, and keeps you waiting, and yet you can’t give up. The pacing is measured, but the tension grows from the very first page, moving from bureaucratic humor to a farmhouse siege, and then to a confrontation. The setting is filled with sensory and visual imagery that accentuates the magical quality of the writing, and these include the root cellar where Vasilica serves bitter tea and the den with the smell of cedar. This is a paranormal story with descriptive prose and ingeniously crafted dialogue.
