Death By Magic: A Josiah Reynolds Mystery 14 by Abigail Keam is a fun, suspenseful mystery about a fortune teller and a puzzling murder. Set in the beautiful landscape of rural Kentucky, the story begins with a fundraiser event for retired racehorses who need a home. The main character, Josiah Reynolds, attends and meets Rudy Lee who just came to Kentucky from Louisiana. A fortune teller hired for the event prophesies Rudy’s murder. Despite her skepticism, Josiah is concerned that there could be some truth to the prophecy. She goes to see the fortune teller, hoping to counter and dismiss the fortune teller’s claims, but only leaves more anxious than before. While Josiah hopes that she and Rudy can evade the impending danger that supposedly lurks around them, her fear mounts when death strikes.
From the first chapter that includes the fortune teller’s chilling prophecy, Death By Magic continues to include gripping revelations. I loved that the story is told from Josiah’s point of view which provides a deeper sense of who she is and her personality. Though sometimes brusque, Josiah is kind and brave. Supporting characters are equally amusing and well-developed. Heart-warming descriptions of Josiah’s farming activities are included throughout the book. Humorous descriptions and conversations also dot the fascinating story. The conversations are compelling and fascinating and they bring out the characters’ attitudes and traits. The story is easy to follow as the mystery focuses on a few characters. Death By Magic is an entertaining and absorbing mystery that contains fascinating characters.
