In Tracey Phillips’ Deepest Secrets, Detective Morgan Jewell is still haunted by memories of the murder of her best friend, Fay Ramsey, that took place seventeen years ago. She is struggling with addiction to painkillers after a hand injury. She takes an undercover job in a small town, Pine Bluff, in Wisconsin. She poses as Natalie Lochner, a woman running away from an abusive boyfriend, and rents an apartment that was once occupied by a drug dealer and police informant named Jake Verninac. Jake vanished while helping the police trace a mafia drug pipeline. Accepting a job at a brewpub where Jake was a partner, Morgan gets to know Gabe and Blaine Olssen, and seeks their help in discovering what Honey Drake, her friendly landlord, really knows. Why do people around her go missing, and what connection might she have with bodies buried under willow trees?

Deepest Secrets is a well-plotted mystery. It is the second book in the Detective Morgan Jewell series, and can be read as a standalone. Morgan is a flawed heroine, a good cop struggling with guilt and addiction. She tends to lie to herself. Honey is a muffin-baking church-going lady with a fierce love for her daughter that hides something deeply sinister. Tracey Phillips writes in elegant prose and punctuates the story with drama-infused dialogue while skillfully exploring trauma, buried secrets, and the evil someone can do. The pacing is steady, taking you through flashbacks to Fay’s murder, following Morgan's investigation, and chilling scenes inside Honey’s head. With its small-town setting, detailed undercover police work, and psychological edge, this book is a delightful read for fans of the genre.
