Destination Remarkable: Surviving the Dark Side of Success is a work of non-fiction in the personal narrative, autobiography, and business success stories subgenres. It is best suited to mature adult readers as it discusses some very dark adult themes. Penned by author Mary Grothe, this book tells the tale of the author, a remarkable woman who raised herself up from a deeply difficult childhood with toxic relationships that followed her into her adult choices. Despite her incredible success in the world of sales, there was more darkness to follow and more enlightenment, healing, and strength to be found along the way.

Author Mary Grothe delivers a lot in this concise and fast-paced read, encapsulating the primary struggles of her life and the demons which haunted her from her early years through much of her adulthood. It was refreshing (and admittedly, harrowing) to read a story where the enormous success of the author’s business dealings actually brings a lot more misery with it, uncovering the truth about the kind of pressure, stress, and devastation that triumph brings in its wake. Her narrative skill enables Grothe to tell her tale from a confident, healed perspective, so we know that no matter how dark the work gets, we’re in good hands to guide us back through to the light. I found the emotional threads and themes of this incredible life story to be well-considered and tied in throughout the book, offering a tapestry of memories that feels complete by the end of the book. Overall, I would certainly recommend Destination Remarkable to readers seeking something totally unique to sink their teeth into.
