In the fantasy adventure novel Diligently Screaming: Ascension Rise in the Deep by A G Inmon, an elf named Luminous and a woman named Emir traverse the magical landscape of Forged Reach to recover fragments of the Legacy Stone to defeat a malevolent force, Malignant. It's a bit of a rocky start but they do form a strong bond as they navigate serious hurdles, including confrontations with the city's prince, discovering secret war plans, and surviving the unthinkable in Winterfall. Together with rescued friends and a reluctant alliance with a Human named Faelyn, they are constantly pursued by enemies and navigate difficult terrain and extreme climate changes. Despite moments of joy, their quest is marred by the deepest sorrow, especially in a shocking discovery, the loss of a companion, and the appearance of a loved one draped by evil. The resolve necessary to continue their mission to the outpost, Dragonhold, must be as strong as their hope of restoring peace.

Do you know that motion people make over their heads to indicate a 'mind blown' exploding sound? Yeah, I'm doing that right now. How on earth did I not know about this series? Ascension Rise in the Deep is the second book in the Diligently Screaming series by A G Inmon, preceded by A Mage Within and soon to be followed, hopefully, with Lights Last Hope. As testimony to how excellent the novel is at sweeping a reader up into the action, I followed the story like the companions on a leisurely river until discovering I'd jumped the line. I loved that Inmon holds tightly to the elements of classic fantasy but does so in a writing style that is extremely approachable. The world-building is cinematic and the characters are all fully developed, the standout being the half-breed Luminous but, for me, I just loved Aurora. She's chock-full of surprises too, that one. There is a lot of death and decay, and one is heartbreaking while the other is a combination of terrifying and strangely encouraging. It's a “This is it! This is what we've come for!” moment, and the metaphor of death leading to life is as crystal clear as parts of the cave. I am so excited to have found the Diligently Screaming series and look forward to seeing where it goes next. Very highly recommended.
