Along the way, he learns some shocking truths about what actually happens to animals the industry throws away. During this brutal time, Dinky starves and suffers from severe neglect and parasites. He’s the victim of a broken system until a kind-hearted couple saves him. Brought to a quiet new farm, his future relies on gaining acceptance from a watchful thoroughbred named Chrome and a strict quarter horse boss named Connella. Can this youngster find his footing and leave his painful past behind?

I really love how the story unfolds at a slow, steady pace that perfectly mirrors actual healing. Hearing the story straight from Dinky’s thoughts makes his journey feel even more intimate and moving. The book shows that patient, loving animal care can truly undo past cruelty, giving us a beautiful look at the bond between people and animals. Watching little Dinky mature is truly very rewarding, as the author carefully shows how this frightened young horse slowly stops acting out once he realizes he is safe. The countryside backdrop shines when the senior herd members intervene to guide the colt and show him how to fit in and find safety in the pasture. All in all, this evocative story does an amazing job of exploring horse instincts and pack behavior. It’s the perfect book for anyone searching for a meaningful tale about trust and starting over.
