Do Not Go Gentle by Allen Shay follows the adventures of two men in the twilight of their lives. John Eastman has had a successful career as an attorney. But now that he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, John wants to live the rest of his life on his own terms. He calls his old friend, Peter Grove, and asks him to accompany him on a final trip from Santa Fe to the Colorado Mountains. While Peter flies to Albuquerque, New Mexico, John's daughter Kate discovers her father's plan to end his own life. Kate seeks help from Scott, Peter's son, and the two follow the trail of their fathers to stop them from executing their plan. Meanwhile, Peter shares his own story.
Do Not Go Gentle is, at its heart, a slice-of-life story that touches upon some existential themes. I really like character-driven narratives, and this novel was perfect for me. Allen Shay paces the plot deliberately, leaving room for the characters to grow and reveal more facets of themselves. I felt Shay did a fantastic job of showing the characters' personalities through their backstories. John and Peter's friendship is, of course, the main anchor of the narrative. Their conversations about the ills plaguing contemporary society were very interesting. I also enjoyed the interactions between Kate and Scott. It's a slow-burner, but you never feel like putting the book down. Even outside the plot, I felt the author's social commentary was spot-on. At times, I found the book very poignant. Overall, it's a great novel, and I highly recommend it.
