Don’t Be Like That by Cynthia A. King is a gripping narrative that follows Leslie Nelson, a woman caught in the aftermath of her husband's financial crimes and personal betrayal. Paul has just vanished, leaving Leslie to deal with far more than she could ever have imagined — a trail of financial fraud that puts the FBI on her trail, strained family relationships, and more. The book chronicles her journey from wrongful arrest, media scrutiny, and personal upheaval to her fight for justice and self-empowerment. As Leslie navigates legal battles, family dynamics, and her emotional landscape, she discovers the truth behind her husband's deception, confronts social prejudices, and seeks a new path forward. Can she clear her name and reclaim her identity and independence?
I loved everything in Don’t Be Like That — the conflict, the intriguing characters, and the fully drawn setting. Cynthia A. King creates a captivating background where Leslie is slowly transformed into a “prototypical New York City married-to-money Manhattanite.” The primary setting is New York City, contrasting the bustling urban landscape with the quiet, rural upstate towns that Leslie calls home. You’ll fall for the characters, especially Leslie, who is portrayed as tough and resourceful. Paul is her charming yet duplicitous husband. The conflict is tautly developed, and apart from Leslie's internal struggles, it explores the legal system, social judgment, and Leslie’s struggles with trust and betrayal. Paul’s disappearance and the fallout are so skillfully executed that it transforms the story into a suspenseful page-turner. You’ll want to know more about Paul and what happens next to Leslie. You’ll enjoy the superb storytelling, exquisite writing, and deft plotting, with emotionally rich characters.
