Double by Gerry Burke introduces a wild ride where international spy games collide head-on with American underworld politics. The story sets off in the quiet English countryside village of Omelette, where a local murder case blows open a major standoff between MI5 and a hidden Russian nuclear plot. Just as you get a handle on the British side of the security nightmare, the scene transitions to Washington, D.C., and Hawaii. Here we meet Al Silvano, a retired Mafia assassin who gets drawn right back into the game when he accepts a high-paying contract to eliminate a targeted political insider. Things spiral into disarray when multiple powerful factions start funding opposing hits using Al himself. Will this veteran hitman outwit these global intelligence agencies and survive his own deadly double paradox?

Gerry Burke’s Double falls squarely into the satirical espionage thriller genre, offering a tale that plays out like a witty, deadpan lampoon of classic secret-agent stories. What makes this book such an engaging read is the way it effortlessly infuses a frantic global crisis with a rich undercurrent of understated comedy. The character dynamics are very amusing, jumping smoothly from eccentric village busybodies to cynical American field operatives like Tex and his newly defected Russian bride, Tatiana. Burke displays a great talent for crafting quick-witted banter and perfectly ridiculous scenarios, keeping the pace moving forward at a good speed. It’s delightful to encounter a political mystery that actively embraces its own playful irreverence, highlighting the sheer absurdity of internal departmental feuds. Watching the various operational threads collide keeps you glued to the pages to witness how these conflicting schemes will ultimately collapse. Readers who enjoy fast-paced political satire and convoluted underworld double-crosses will absolutely devour this book.
