Dragon Cartel by Carmen Amato is set in Acapulco’s dangerous underworld. Detective Emilia Cruz hunts El Barracuda, a cartel hitman, when she takes on a missing-person case. A Customs inspector disappears from the city port, and Emilia is asked to help. Emilia soon realizes this is more than just a missing-person case. Emilia runs into dead ends, as nobody wants to cooperate with the investigation. Emilia’s only clue is a list of commercial shipping containers, and she finds an identical list during an operation targeting El Barracuda. Emilia has to find a link between the missing inspector and El Barracuda. As the investigation deepens, it is clear that what began as a local crime has soon expanded into a dangerous conspiracy reaching from Mexico and the United States to China.

Dragon Cartel by Carmen Amato had me hooked from the first page until the last. The pace is fast but gives readers enough time to process everything before moving on. The action never lets up, and it kept me turning the pages as fast as I could. Emilia is a determined detective who gives her all to the investigation. We can see the toll her workload takes on her. Every character had their specific role in the plot. Several subplots were skillfully woven together with the shipping container list as the central one. I could never guess what would happen next and was surprised every time. The book was expertly written, and I enjoyed reading it. It stayed with me long after I finished.
