Duck It! by C.O.B. follows Lionel Romero, who's ready to leave Florida, a place bound to his family, his work, and his former life with Effie Dominguez, after nearly all human life has been wiped out. In January 2035, Lionel hits the road in a modified electric golf cart-truck, keeping a written record of the trip. Along the route, Lionel sees evidence of mass death, buries a family in an abandoned car, transports two young men to their destination, comes face to face with an armed women’s organization, and defends himself from thieving, outlet mall-seeking children. Every attempt to move forward is thwarted by a world that has other plans for him. Still, Lionel clings to his notebook and a reinforced desire to plow onward to Dubuque.
Duck It! by C.O.B. is an intelligently witty dystopian novel in a genre that is in desperate need of something fresh. Lionel’s days are recorded, which gives the format a unique perspective, and while I'm not normally a huge fan of journal entries, it does suit the story well here. The details run the gamut of the seemingly small, like stopping the truck to vomit, patching torn upholstery with duct tape, and reading his mother’s Bible, to larger victories, like assembling a fire pit at a gas station to eat proper s’mores for the first time. C.O.B.'s world-building is textured and fully realized, and even when we do not actually see something that has happened from Lionel, we get secondhand accounts of betrayal, punishment, and survival from brilliant ancillary characters, with Duke being the standout. Overall, this is a fantastic read, and I had far too much fun in a world so bleak. Recommended.
