Leah fears she has ruined her career after a meltdown on her positive affirmation podcast, the only thing helping her cope since her husband’s death nine months ago. In Eat the Cake by Annie Cathryn, Leah takes a ninety-day leave to regroup, starting with cleaning out her husband’s belongings. With her sister-in-law, Megan, she discovers that Elliot had planned a trip for them to Florence, the city where his father lives. Wanting to honor Elliot’s plans, Leah and Megan decide to go. The journey to Florence sets the stage for a heartfelt and often amusing tale. In Florence, they discover Elliott had assembled a sort of scavenger hunt for Leah. The hunt includes several locations specifically to help her overcome her fears of flying and heights. Then, upon her return to Chicago, she discovers Elliot still has another secret.

In Eat the Cake, Annie Cathryn’s story is filled with delightfully amusing anecdotes and colorful and charming characters. She creates several sticky situations for her characters, piling coincidence upon coincidence as they enjoy the scavenger hunt's spontaneity. Leah and Megan are warm, easy-to-like people, and the author shares aspects of their personal lives with both humor and pathos. Throughout the narrative, I was kept guessing about Leah’s backstory and the mystery of the chocolate cake angst. I found myself rooting for her to conquer her fears, to use the tradition of making wishes in the fountains in Florence to ease the guilt associated with her husband’s death, and begin a new, happier chapter of her life.
