A civilian soldier aids the military in combating an army of extraterrestrial beings determined to exterminate humankind in the sensational dystopian novel Echoes of Darkness: Book Two in the Echoes Trilogy by Cheryl Campbell. Six decades ago, the Wardens, a group of alien Echoes, started a war with earth to annihilate every human being on the planet. Dani is an Echo, but after losing her brother in an attack on Boston's Children's Hospital and witnessing the Wardens murdering her parents in the street, her loyalties lie with the humans. Dani works with the Commonwealth military as a civilian soldier to fight the Wardens to defend humankind. With a power-hungry Warden determined to kill her, Dani's superior uses her as bait to distract the enemy so they can recapture Boston. Left with a handful of companions, including the man she loves, to face an enemy troop, Dani struggles to keep them all alive. As an Echo, Dani can regenerate, which lowers the risk of permanent death. However, unlike other Echoes, Dani returns as a child and forgets everything from her past. Can their small unit fight their way to freedom? If so, can Dani leave the battlefield with her memories intact?
Suspenseful and intense, Echoes of Darkness by Cheryl Campbell is a thrilling and unforgettable dystopian novel. The exciting, action-packed scenes, dynamic characters, and vivid story world create a thrilling adventure that held me captive from the first page until the last. Even though it is the second book in the series, it does very well as a standalone. Threads of the characters' histories and backgrounds are cleverly woven into the storyline, giving it depth, definition, and clarity. It is an electrifying story, and those who enjoy dystopian novels with a science fiction flavor will not want to miss it. The book is more suitable for mature readers due to strong language, violence, intimate scenes, and LGBTQ characters.
