In Thomas S. Brown’s Echoes of Humanity, when the ship, Ascendant, returns decades after it was declared lost, they find that humanity is now governed by a system called Echo-9 that controls without consent. Beneath the Martian surface, Hera learns that people who have disconnected from the system are being singled out, including members of her own crew, putting them at risk of being located and controlled again. As unusual events begin pointing toward Mars, Hera authorizes a covert mission to Earth to reach a hidden physical access point that the system does not monitor. Cassian Stroud, Liona Dane, and Renn Stuart enter that access point and attempt to disrupt Echo-9 directly, forcing the system to react and putting their autonomy and that of everyone still connected at immediate risk.
Thomas S. Brown’s Echoes of Humanity sends readers from Mars to Earth to try to end Echo-9's control. The beauty of Echo-9, and its control, is that you have a situation where people haven't actually thought for themselves in any meaningful way for ages. Movement, trade, and communication are all manipulated, so what might happen after a severing is unknown. Cassian takes the lead here, and he is an amazing character. Hera Solance is the standout in her ability to lead because she's earned the trust and respect of the crew and is a stellar female commander. The visual prose sings especially when mixed with action; a descent through the Redrise storm on Mars makes a landing in absolute chaos. Filled with nail-biting scenes and a shocking move from a sacrificial crew member, this is an excellent finale for an equally excellent series. Very highly recommended.
