In Echoes of Maya by Kelly Vincent, eight-year-old Maya is Lauren’s stepsister, and together with their neighbor Gabriel, the three are close friends. On Halloween night, Lauren takes Maya trick-or-treating while their parents are at work. With missing children in the news, Lauren tries to stay vigilant, but when she briefly follows another child dressed as a pirate, Maya vanishes. Gabriel joins the desperate search and is the one who finds Maya’s body, leading to heartbreak and anger between him and Lauren. Soon after, Gabriel is wrongfully arrested for Maya’s murder, and he and Lauren reconnect. Lauren and Gabriel discover they both have haunting dreams about that fateful night, visions that might hold the key to uncovering the real killer. Together, Lauren and Gabriel must confront painful memories and follow clues from their dreams to find the truth and achieve justice for Maya.

Echoes of Maya by Kelly Vincent was an emotional roller coaster. The action started at the very beginning, and with all the twists and turns, it never stopped. The story was fast-paced, but there was enough time to process everything before the next event. I was glued to the book and could not turn the pages fast enough due to the tension. The writing style was engaging, and at times, my emotions completely took over. I literally felt I was part of Gabriel's and Lauren's lives and felt their grief over their loss. The characters were well-developed and relatable. The characters were so realistic that they could easily be anyone I know who is currently struggling with grief. This book is absolutely fantastically written and has all the components needed to make it a hit that will stay with you.
