Ellie & The War On Powder Creek is the second book in The Dolan Girls Series by S. R. Mallery. Ellie is going through a hard time. After losing her baby in a riding accident, she has an emptiness inside her that she feels nothing can fulfill. The fact that her husband is drifting away from her is making her feel depressed. He blames himself for her accident and is jealous of a stranger who has come into their lives. Through this turmoil, Ellie has to do her part in the Wyoming Cattle Wars and find out what is really happening. There is something fishy going on and she needs to find out before it is too late. Can she help her people while at the same time save her marriage?
This is one of those rare western romances that are historically accurate. From the way the characters talk to their dress and their way of life, the author has given a very accurate account of how the west was back in the late 1800s. The narrative was reflective of that time; the descriptions took me to the places and the characters and had me experiencing the hardships and tension along with them. I really felt Ellie’s pain and conflict. She was trying hard to make her marriage work while at the same time doing her duty to find out what was really happening in her community. I was very much involved in her story and wanted her to succeed. The author’s writing style is the magic behind this amazing novel. S. R. Mallery did a great job at keeping the story alive, keeping the momentum going and making sure that the reader didn’t lose interest at any point. I loved this book and cannot wait to read more about Ellie. A wonderful novel!
