Phantom Algebra by Dan Rice is part of The Haunting of Pinedale High series. Zuri has come to Pinedale in North Carolina to start a new life with her mom after being on the run from her dad. She dreams of being a champion fighter, and she's over the moon when she finds a gym to start her mixed martial arts training. Her life changes when she discovers the library is haunted by a tween phantom, and she decides to help them find peace. But things change for the worse when she angers the devils – and not just the dead ones. She needs to use all her training and a few friends to keep everyone safe and help the phantom find its way onward.

Phantom Algebra by Dan Rice is a cracking good book, and it’s well worth the time to read. The story is unique, and it throws you in at the deep end right from the first page. This is well-written, perfectly suited for the YA audience, and offers plenty of action. The characters have been developed with their own personalities, and every one of them is likable. You’ll be on Zuri’s side all the way through. This isn’t just about a phantom haunting a library, though. The story also deals with family trauma, resettling in a new place and the difficulties it brings, and also choosing the right people to work with to get results. This is an incredibly enjoyable story that hooks you and keeps you reading from start to finish, fully invested in what happens. Highly recommended reading, regardless of age.
