Dancing is wonderful. Dancing can make you travel across worlds, dimensions, memories, and dreams, and can make your soul sing with happiness and delight. Ellie, now an older woman, lost her life partner, her husband Hugo. After he passed, Ellie was trying to come to terms with the loss of the most important person in her life. As she was still grieving, being alone was tough, so one day, she got a cat whom she named Hugo, after her husband, to keep her company. The cat was wonderful and cuddly, and it was there for Ellie when she needed it. One night, when Ellie was sleeping, something strange happened; the shadow of Hugo the cat suddenly came to life! And in no other shape than the one of her late husband Hugo! After Ellie woke up and realized what was happening, she happily embraced this magical moment and enjoyed her time with the love of her life. Whether it was a dream or something entirely else, Ellie enjoyed every minute of it, and as they both loved dancing, she and Hugo danced almost every night on the rooftops of the city. They danced the night and Ellie’s grief and loneliness away.
In Ellie’s Magical Cat, author James Goddard approaches the theme of grief and loss from a positive aspect of healing through dancing. A dancer himself, he understands the importance of movement in dealing with our mental health and hard situations in life and manages to incorporate these experiences into this short, lovely, and heart-warming story about the love of dancing and love for one another. It is an inspiring read that will introduce the young reader to the heavy life themes of grief and loss of a loved one in an almost innocent and agreeable way, and at the same time, it manages to create an atmosphere appropriate to the theme, but with an air of dreaminess and zeal.
