Emma and the Box of Wonder by Matthew S. Cox is the sixth book in the Tales of Widowswood series. All Emma wanted was to have a simple day with her sister and their friend until their day takes a strange turn. When they manage to thwart a kidnapping, the three girls discover a magical box that saves them by transporting them far from home and on an epic journey. Now to find their way back home, they must band together as they encounter a variety of new dangers, new friends, and an unforgettable adventure.
Emma, Kimber, and Ambril are three distinctive characters from their personalities to how they speak. Each character is well-rounded. The relationship between the three girls is lovely as, despite their differences, they have a strong bond between them. They keep each other moving forward as they embark on this journey and overcome various obstacles on their way home. The various characters they encounter throughout are charming and unique. Their dangerous and epic quest takes them from one obstacle to another such as an attempted kidnapping, thieves, being transported by a magical box far from home, and a journey that takes them to places such as the tomb of the ancestors and the forest of sorrow. The adventure is driven by the magical box which serves as a catalyst for what takes them to different places and keeps them from where they want to be – which is home. The magic is carefully woven, making this world unique and dangerous with prolonged life, shapeshifting, and gorgeous animals such as ice deer and spiders that are preyed on by silk hunters. A lovely and original tale, Emma and the Box of Wonder by Matthew S. Cox is a charming and emotional read that pits friendship and adventure against a magical world.
