Evolve by Alysa Wolfe is a lyrical novel in a post-apocalyptic vision of New York. Set more than two centuries after the present time, it talks about a world where monarchy replaces democracy. In the midst of this are Princess Kamile, the heiress, and her bodyguard, Agent 86. Just a few days before Kamile's coronation, they find themselves in a world of political intrigue where revolution is brewing on the horizon, and no one is really safe. We follow them as they make their way through a quagmire of complexities and look for a way to save themselves and their kingdom.
Evolve is a fast-paced fantasy that is equal parts exciting and harrowing. The author beautifully creates a fantastical ambiance of castles and sprawling corridors. At the same time, she adds a layer of gothic and discomfort by introducing the diaries of Kamile's grandfather. The characters stand out and establish their own voices. I especially appreciated the dynamic between the two female characters. It brilliantly depicts two distinct personas, strong in their own ways. The twists in the plot hook the reader to the last page. Kamile's journey is also exciting to follow; she goes from self-doubt to self-reliance, making it a delight for readers.
The book treats the topic of the treatment of bodily impairment gently and brilliantly. Including more details regarding the history and extended politics will add a layer of intrigue to the story. However, Evolve by Alysa Wolfe is an outstanding read. I will recommend it to lovers of fantasy and post-apocalyptic fiction. Readers who appreciate fast-paced plots and strong female characters will enjoy this book.
