As a child, I remember dreaming of far-off places and fairytales, of running around the palace grounds as a princess, swimming in the blue lagoon as a mermaid, and of course, soaring through the sky as a fairy. However, what if the mythological creatures we grow up loving wished they were alongside humans, wandering the earth? In Fae: Volume One by Kota Wade, this concept is explored through the lens of Echo, a fairy eager to be a part of the human world, no matter what she’s been told by other fairies. Instead of living in fear and distrust, she leaps and falls in love with a dashingly handsome human named Cole. While she tries to make him forget their romantic night together through spells and charms, the power of love ends up being stronger than any magic.
Perhaps there’s nothing more human than the dream of being fully known by someone, and Wade captures this well through her words. However, the author explores more than just the relational aspect of humanity. Fae by Kota Wade offers insightful, fulfilling female friendships between Echo and her best friend, Aura, who is quick to offer advice when Echo needs it the most. The vivid, descriptive language keeps you engaged from the moment when Echo sets eyes on Cole until the book’s final moments. This is a wonderful read, and it brought me back to my childhood of playing fairies with my older sisters. Wade has a natural gift for building worlds with her words, and I am very excited to read the next installment of this story.
