In Natalie Hibberd's saga, there are only two possibilities: either you are The Inside or The Outside. The conflict between the two factions is prominent in Family Ties, the second novel in the Inside-Out world. On the one hand, we have the Inside, mired in trivial issues and unaware of the gravity of the situation. Nevertheless, a small group of people on this side are aware of what is happening and are attempting to reclaim control by sending a spy to the Outside's rebel organization, The Freedom Fighters. On the other hand, the Outside is in shambles as they deal with internal betrayals and moles while facing the other side. The world is falling apart, but the end is still far off.

In Family Ties, Natalie Hibberd upholds the excellent standard of her first book. You can see how everything is a preparation for the impending battle. It is the calm before the storm, a situation that strains every situation and person to the utmost. Hibberd’s writing is succinct, just like it was in the previous book, but the result in each is different. The first book was straightforward, making the story lively and light. However, the second book makes use of this conciseness to heighten the tension of the plot. Each character is on the verge of breaking, which Hibberd uses to give them all great personal growth. Even the characters you will love to hate will win your heart, and it is through them that you will discover the complexities of the universe that Hibberd paints in her story. It is perfect for individuals who miss the forgotten dystopian genre. This book is all you could dream of - a great continuation of an even more incredible saga.
