In Fantom Force: The Awakening by Shaddow and Kendrick Woodson, Fantom, a leopard anthro loses a battle with the mecha mega-villain Clovis. After an intense mile high battle, he falls from the sky onto the planet Synergius where humans, called In-gan, and anthros, called Ban-in, live in an uneasy balance. Luckily, he is rescued by Sunny, a cute school girl who just happens to have some medical expertise. But Fantom Force is no romance novel and soon Fantom is off training with several masters to build up his strength as well as gather other like-minded individuals in order to defeat the bad guys and save the world in this action packed Marvel/Manga mashup.
Fantom Force was a very interesting book. It's divided into six episodes and is largely written in a script-like format. Since I had no previous knowledge of Fantom Force, I wasn't sure whether it was intended to be a novel, a comic script, or an animation script as Shaddow's and Woodson's love of comics and Japanese pop cultures is very evident within the pages and there are anime styled character drawings throughout. With every action packed page I couldn't wait to see the artist, Bonnie Tang's, new character sketch. The characters themselves were numerous (a dossier of all the character names would have been awesome), each had diverse back stories and motivations that lent a richness and depth to the world of Fantom Force: The Awakening. Great for anthro fans looking for an action packed meet up between East and West comic styles.
