Fighting Mad by Kathy Bryson is a romance novel about leprechauns, but not the commercialized stereotype. These are magical, Irish warriors. Sexy, magical, Irish warriors. The heroine is a mom, and that is awesome. She has two teen daughters and a giant crush on the rough and tumble owner of the toughest bar in town, who isn't all he seems. From the first, you know this is going to be a bad week for her. She loses her job, wrecks her car, and scrambles to scare up business for her florist business with little success. From there, it just gets worse because if that isn't enough, she finds herself in a war between faeries.
As far as romance goes, the plot is pretty standard. Kathy Bryson has written it well and it entertains. Where this book shines is the awesomeness of her characters. Carla is "just a mom." She defines herself as a mom. She works hard for her children and denies herself everything as so many single mothers do, and, from the first, you want her to have this. The crowd from the others of Bryson's series are hilarious and genuine. The hero is sexy, but also endearing. While the rest of the world keeps asking how he could want her, his answer is always 'how could you not?'
I admit I wondered as I read how exactly Kathy Bryson was going to pull this plot off with such a heroine. You have not lived until you have experienced the King of the Faeries being felled by the "Mom voice." The book is worth it just for that alone. The novelty of the heroine saving herself and her community is improved upon by her being a mom like every other mom on the planet. Amidst all of her struggles and perceived failures, she's dealing with temperamental beings from other realms. Fighting Mad is definitely a great read, and I highly recommend it to all fans of paranormal romance.
