Firemage by Whitney A. Curtis is an explosive tale of adventure and friendship. Dirk, like his older brother, was born with the ability to manipulate fire. With his brother in danger, Dirk embarks on a quest to find answers. Together with his best friend Bole and a slew of interesting characters, Dirk must learn to unlock his full potential in order to find out about his brother's fate.

Characterization is the driving force behind Firemage. Like his elemental power, Dirk is passionate, fiery and brash. Bole as his best friend /foil is a good source of sage advice and the occasional scolding. Even Dirk's enemies have interesting back stories and peculiar character traits. The entire elemental magic system is easy to comprehend and fun to imagine. Fireballs and blizzards are just some of the many powerful skills these mages have. The action and battle scenes are well-written with tactical strategy and pure unadulterated power well-represented. People who love animation and manga like Naruto, Bleach and Fairy Tail will feel right at home with the action and fight scenes. Indeed it seems the entire plot is constructed around these scenes. The world building isn't as extensive as most fantasy books but that's okay.

As an action driven fantasy saga, Firemage's success relies on its protagonist. And Dirk is interesting enough to be able to hold this story together. Firemage is an action-filled yarn that expounds upon concepts of friendship and family. Whitney A. Curtis has crafted the perfect gift for any young fantasy enthusiast.
