Flame is the fifth book in the Firefighters of Montana series, written by Victoria Purman. It had been ten years since Cady Adams had drunkenly thrown herself at her high school crush, Dex McCoy. Not wanting to start college as a virgin, Cady had wanted Dex to be her first; he had instead rejected her, unwilling to take advantage of an intoxicated woman. Ten years later, Cady and Dex meet again when Dex walks into Cady’s cake shop to pick up an order for his fire-fighting team at Glacier Creek’s forestry service. Cady is still furious that Dex had rejected her all those years ago, but when she learns of the reason he had not taken advantage of her that day, her heart slowly melts and the wall she had built around herself starts to crumble. Cady and Dex start getting to know one another again, until Cady's nightmares of losing him in a fire cause her to abruptly end their romance. Unwilling to give up on their love, Dex is determined to fight for Cady's heart until his dying breath.
Victoria Purman’s tale of misunderstandings in love, anger and grudges leading to an incredible romance, is one that I will be reading again and again. All of the favorite characters from previous books in the Firefighters of Montana series are cleverly written into the story, including an anniversary memorial which brought a tear to my eye. I was amused, yet not surprised, that an intoxicated person had only remembered half of what had happened all those years ago and had held on to her hostile feelings for so long. A large array of emotions were touched upon in this incredible read, which is a cocktail of love, humor, tragedy, action, suspense and romance. Having read all of the books in the series, each one from a different author, I was impressed to see that the continuity of each of the characters remained intact. Flame carries action and suspense at every turn of the page, leaving the reader wanting more and more. I recommend this book to those who enjoy incredible love stories which make you laugh and cry at the same time, and I look forward to the next book in the Firefighters of Montana series.
