Flights of Vengeance by Robert Gandt is a gripping tale intertwining aerospace engineering, political intrigue, and personal redemption. The story follows Erik Bren, an enigmatic inventor and aerospace engineer whose groundbreaking projects are jeopardized by a catastrophic rocket failure. This disaster leads to a critical American presidential campaign impacted by subsequent events, including the crash of his revolutionary aircraft, the S-bird, with serious consequences for his ally, Congressman Jared Plummer, who is a candidate running for the presidency. As the plot unfolds, Bren navigates a web of conspiracies involving shadowy figures and corporate machinations to uncover the truth and protect those he cares about. They targeted him, and now he is coming for them, and with far superior tools — his brilliant mind and engineering genius.
Robert Gandt impresses with his superior storytelling, creating an intriguing hero in Bren, a complex character who exudes intelligence and mystery. He is self-reliant and brilliant, yet haunted by the specters of past failures and betrayal. His mentor, surrogate father, and best friend, Fred Tanaka, provides wisdom and guidance while remaining rooted in a Zen-like philosophy. The setting shifts between the scenic Florida coast and the claustrophobic confines of high-tech facilities, enhancing the tension as Bren races against time to fight those targeting him. Flights of Vengeance is stylistic, and the symbolism, particularly through the shark and the cosmos, captures Bren's fears and ambitions as he struggles with his purpose. Themes of betrayal and redemption are ingeniously developed, and the author crafts authentic relationships, including the one between Bren and Marla Fremont, a campaign publicist who is a potential ally and a romantic interest.
