Flipping by R. Lee Fryar is the first book in the Haunted Hearts series. When Charley died, he never expected to find peace in the afterlife, let alone find a home with other ghosts. But that’s exactly what he found. Now he could potentially lose everything when a house flipper named Austin arrives, intending to renovate and sell the place Charley calls home. Determined to keep his home, Charley makes a promise that he will personally drive the new owner out the door. Once Austin starts tearing the house apart, the ghosts will soon follow. Charley has been a ghost for a while and knows what tricks can scare the living, but even his best doesn’t seem enough to scare Austin away. To add to the complication, the more time Charley spends trying to make Austin leave, the more drawn to him he becomes.

The perspective flips what’s typical for the paranormal genre as the entire story takes place from Charley’s viewpoint. You quickly get a solid understanding of the ghosts’ plight and the way their afterlife works, specifically with how much the house means to them. It also creates a twist with the ghosts as onlookers who are watching the living. The humor is derived from Charley’s attempts at haunting, which include some typical ghostly antics. R. Lee Fryar freshens the genre with something that feels different and original. The romance weaves delightful twists into an enemies-to-lovers trope as Charley attempts to force Austin to leave. The two have a lovely chemistry and personalities that mesh well, so you quickly want to see where the relationship will go. Charley’s personality is established well in the writing with phrases that often poke fun at death. The unexpected quips are humorous and give Charley fuller development as the protagonist. The tone is upbeat and romantic; however, some moments are deeply emotional and explore the concept of death on a more profound level. While the ghosts are amusing and the humor is easy to find, Fryar successfully includes moments that are grittier and peel back the reality of their existence. A lovely paranormal romance, Flipping twists the genre with a fresh perspective, an emotional exploration of death, and plenty of romance.
