Fortified is the first book in The Legacy Chapters series by V. Romas Burton. It is a bleak and dire story but with plenty of things to hope for and look forward to. When the story begins, you find Lady Devora Medee, Governor Cusha Medee’s daughter, who is getting ready for categorization to enter Vlacklear Academy. At the same time, she is engaged to the tall, handsome, and intelligent Tristan. But things don’t go her way as she discovers that Tristan would only want to marry her because of her status. On top of that, instead of being delegated to attend Vlacklear, she is sent to the Fortress, a once-prison-now-military academy. As she becomes an unwilling soldier, she must suppress her Seeing abilities and tread carefully to avoid Warden Hazor. When her ability is revealed, she turns to the ruthless right-hand man of the Warden to prevent being slaughtered like the other Seers.

As the first book in a promising new series, Fortified is off to a good start. Structurally, the plot takes you from hopes that lead to one setback to another, and you get a sense of the odds of triumph for Devora. The best scenes come with her experiences as a soldier in training inside the Fortress. For all the excitement and twist that the storyline offers, V. Romas Burton writes with depth and makes it really intelligent when you take into account a protagonist who is removed from her comfort zone and must navigate unfamiliar politics. Devora may strike you as a pampered diva in the beginning, but the Fortress allows her to develop and she becomes a powerful character. Fortified is an engrossing story with an ending that will make you look forward to the next installment. It’s a story with grit and heart. Reading it will leave you satisfied.
