Howard L. Dalton’s Four-Footed Sergeant is a beautiful account of a Marine armored unit officer and his fiercely loyal dog, Injector, who served beside him in the intense Pacific theater of World War II. Coming from a Texas farm background and holding a dairy science degree from Texas A&M University, Dalton entered the service in 1942. He eventually shipped out to the front lines of Iwo Jima with his uniquely named chow-terrier mascot. Injector was so much more than a military pet; he was a mascot who worked his way up to sergeant, riding in vehicles with the crew, using his sharp tracking skills to expose enemy lines, and clearing out the underground tunnels. This memoir gives us an intimate look at the relationship between service members and military animals, reminding us that a trusted animal could actually save lives and even bring comfort in the middle of a war.
Howard L. Dalton’s Four-Footed Sergeant is a heartwarming military memoir centered on the pure power of battlefield companionship. I loved reading the author’s memories of his dog’s protective nature, whether he was alerting troops to hidden snipers or keeping watch during high-risk recovery missions on the island. It is mind-blowing to learn about Injector’s survival instincts, especially his stubborn refusal to board a vehicle moments before an enemy strike, which kept him from being caught in the blast on the exterior hull. Dalton’s prose really brings the realities of frontline military service to life, cementing the enduring legacy of a canine soldier who would survive the brutal island campaign to spend his final years peacefully as a beloved family pet. If you’re a fan of military history or the profound connection between humans and animals in wartime, this touching book is a very satisfying read.
