Freddy's New Friend, by Ngozi Edema, is a warm, cute book about making friends and showing kindness. The second in a series about Freddy (the first being Freddy and the Veggies), this follow-up has Freddy living in the happy little town of Giggletown with his family and friends. Things are fun there, and he really likes it. But then one day Freddy's dad says they have to move to a bigger town. It seemed like an exciting idea to Freddy, but when he realizes he'll have to say goodbye to the people and places he loves and is used to, he begins to worry.
If you've ever had to move as a child, had to pack up your belongings, and go to a new place, a new home, or a new school, you will relate to this story. Edema really captures the emotions that Freddy feels about this big change in his life, especially when he is at school and feeling shy and friendless. He felt really alone. But the saving grace in this story is his classmate Noah, who encourages Freddy to play ball with him. Noah reaching out is an example of the kindness this book is about. This little gesture turned things around in a positive way for Freddy.
You will love this simple, easy-to-understand story about showing kindness, and the illustrations are sweet too. You will also find a message about a mother's role in a child's life. At the end of the book, you will find coloring pages to color, and worksheets with questions to answer, which will help young readers think about their feelings and what they can do to be kind to others. If you're looking for a book that could help make a difference in the lives of the people they meet, Freddy's New Friend, by Ngozi Edema, is the perfect choice.
