Black Swan Languages has hit on a brilliant formula for learning with this excellent anthology of carefully-crafted stories, and it makes for an innovative blend of storytelling and language instruction that brings Paris to life for readers. As someone who studied French in high school and has tried to pick it up again here and there as an adult, I found these stories easy to get into and a good refresher for things I’d forgotten, whilst also filling in the gaps in my knowledge of this level, especially in how grammar and syntax work for different situations. Fiction brings different language skills to the forefront compared to the simplistic “I” statements we learn at school, so it was great to see them used here in practical language development. The book is a compelling tool for intermediate language learners to deepen their French skills whilst also getting that cultural immersion. It certainly made me eager for my next trip to Paris! Overall, French Short Stories in Paris is a highly recommended learning tool and also a truly unique way to experience Parisian culture.
