Getting Ready for a Hurricane is a non-fiction picture book for young readers. Fei Zheng-Ward has written a guide for those who live in hurricane-prone regions to help them prepare calmly and stay safe. The sections are organized methodically, beginning with descriptions of how hurricanes are formed when winds begin to spin warm water that rises from the ocean. Next, it shows how scientists track the size and direction of a hurricane, give it a name, and warn people in its path. Then comes the heart of the book, which is about how kids and families can prepare for a hurricane. Lists of supplies, personal belongings, and deciding whether to stay home or evacuate are all covered from a child’s point of view. Pets are included in the safety plans. Tips for staying safe and calm during a hurricane, and what to watch for afterward, offer very useful advice.

Getting Ready for a Hurricane is a book with a unique theme that parents and children will find useful and interesting. Without any sensationalism or talking down to kids, Fei Zheng-Ward shows how knowledge and preparation are the essential tools for surviving hurricane season. It encourages kids to take responsibility for their own safety during and after the storm. There are useful workbook pages at the end so kids and families can develop their own safety plans. The illustrations by Moch. Fajar Shobaru support the text with clear pictures to which kids can relate easily. Parents, schools and kindergartens, libraries, and community emergency preparedness personnel will find it a very useful teaching and preparation tool. Highly recommended.
