Children may feel a little nervous on their first day of school because they are arriving in a new environment. To help them understand that school is a wonderful place, Fei Zheng-Ward offers young readers Getting Ready for Kindergarten. She shows them what the first school experiences are like: meeting the teacher, saying goodbye to parents, and taking a seat in the classroom. She then encourages little ones to be brave and introduce themselves to their new classmates to make friends. She also describes what they will find in the classroom, such as the whiteboard or the teacher's desk. Later, she briefly introduces the subjects they usually take, recess, and activities used for learning, such as coloring or counting. Getting Ready for Kindergarten will show young children that learning is a fun and engaging experience.
There is not only one main character, so each image illustrates different children in diverse situations. That was one of my favorite aspects because it allows young readers to relate to the story more easily. Some scenes naturally integrate educational content. For example, in the cafeteria, various types of food are mentioned, which helps to expand vocabulary. Colors are also named when showing the students' backpacks. Fei Zheng-Ward uses a clear and simple narrative style with short sentences, making it an ideal read for younger children. The story is dynamic and entertaining, presenting the best of the first day of school. Getting Ready for Kindergarten will give children the confidence they need to begin a new stage in their lives.
