The Adventures of Dori, A Rescue Pup: Mountain Fun is a children’s picture book written by Kathleen Conway and Juanita Ellis. It follows Dori and her canine friends, Molly, Bucky, and Archie, who like adventure and live in the mountains of Silver Mine Holler. They love their small animal community and are friends with the squirrels, possums, and bunnies that roam the forest. One day, while hiking up the mountain, they hear an animal in distress. They immediately take action to find the source of the sound. They look up at an oak tree and see a big bear, who introduces himself as Tiny, holding onto a branch, frightened of falling from the tree. Tiny explains that he got stuck in the tree because he got carried away eating acorns and did not realize how high he had climbed. Dori quickly realizes that Tiny is afraid of heights and that the wind is making the tree sway back and forth. She quickly assembles all her friends to devise a plan to rescue Tiny.
The Adventures of Dori, A Rescue Pup: Mountain Fun is a lesson-packed book that teaches kids to be adventurous, helpful, and resourceful. Dori and her friends are good role models for kids. The way they handle the rescue situation is admirable. Kathleen Conway and Juanita Ellis use simple language to narrate the story, which makes it easy to follow. The style is conversational, which makes it engaging to read and helps children relate to the characters. The illustrations by Tullip Studios show the beauty of the mountain region and the adorable characters. Dori and her friends are lively dogs, and each wears a unique neck scarf that makes it easy to tell them apart. The scarves also add a vibrant touch to their different personalities. Dori has a leadership trait that sets her apart and shows her courageous side. I truly enjoyed this book and highly recommend sharing it with your children to remind them to be helpful, kind, to think quickly on their feet, and to manage their emotions during a crisis.
