Getting Ready for My Plane Ride: An Airplane Book for Kids by Dr. Fei Zheng-Ward explains to young readers what it will be like taking a flight for the first time. It follows a young child who is getting ready for their first plane ride. They think about what they will need to pack. They also take readers through the check-in and security process with them. Then readers board the plane with them and observe things like the flight attendant going over the safety rules. Readers are in for a bumpy ride as they learn how to navigate new experiences that can be both exciting and a bit overwhelming.
Dr. Fei Zheng-Ward has written a very effective story for young readers. I appreciated the blend of information and the emotional reassurance. The tone was encouraging and simple. The author created the perfect guide for children who may be nervous about their first flight. I loved the step-by-step format to help children understand what to expect from check-in to boarding. I immediately recognized themes like safety, preparation, and the repeated affirmation “I am safe.” Moch. Fajar Shobaru’s illustrations were bright and expressive. They clearly depicted each stage of a child’s airplane experience. The interactive elements were a smart choice. For example, the child invited readers to select what they would pack or try to identify the signs on the plane. It made the story engaging and more personal. It reminded me of Lisa Brown’s The Airport Book. Getting Ready for My Plane Ride is a great tool to familiarize children with the airport experience.
