Fed up with his renowned warrior mother's overbearing behavior toward him, Kavi disobeys her orders and sets out on a perilous quest with a young Bricker. Little does he know how unprepared he is for this adventure until he and his friends are taken prisoner by The League. Then Kavi recognizes that he has become a pawn in a much larger battle between two rival groups. The only thing left for the young warrior to do is use his talent and empathy to get himself and his recently assembled unit through this nightmare in Ghost Squad: Evolution Trials, Book 1 by Sean Kennedy.
In Sean Kennedy's Ghost Squad, the plot seems simple at first, but as the reader grows attached to Kavi in his struggle for survival, it becomes incredibly compelling. Kennedy draws the reader in by creating the expectation that Kavi's initial circumstances will be quickly resolved. This expectation grows as we learn about The League's inventive strategies for thinning the herd while pursuing their quests. Kennedy deserves praise for using a detailed and creative writing style to describe these unusual tasks. He encourages the reader to consider unconventional solutions to how the Ghost Squad will solve tasks that remind one of Hercules' Labors. The emotional subplot that arises from Grim coming to terms with his violent side and Kavi's maturing character equally balances the story's tactical and combative elements. Readers who enjoy fantasy will find Ghost Squad to be a captivating read.
