Gifted: The Hayven Series, Book One is a young adult contemporary fantasy novel written by J.A. George. Avery Gray is a sophomore at Huxton University. She's a student studying International Business with her friend, Toni. The two had become friends when Toni's family moved next door to Ava's home, and the plan to go to Huxton revolved around that friendship as much as it did the excellent reviews the place had received. Ava loved the neighborhood and her own room at university, and she enjoyed the camaraderie she had with her small group of friends, but she wasn't sure about her major. She wasn't even sure if she wanted to bother changing majors or just take a year off. She was on her way to meet the gang at an Italian restaurant for dinner, but she was running late, and already Toni was calling to see where she was. Ava decided to take a shortcut through an alleyway, something she rarely did, and she ended up on an unfamiliar street. Hearing a loud crash, she stopped and approached the source of the noise; a bookstore that seemed closed. Fearing that someone might be injured, she pushed open the door and found an elderly woman lying on the ground.

J.A. George's young adult contemporary fiction novel, Gifted: The Hayven Series, Book One, follows an innocent and disconnected nineteen-year-old as she's introduced into a strange and wonderful alternative world which only the gifted can enter. As I was reading this absorbing and well-plotted story, I started wishing that Hayven were a real place and that I could be among those gifted ones who got to experience its cafes, streets and parks, and attend university there. George's characters are finely drawn, and her fantasy world is an original and compelling one. I enjoyed following Ava as she explores Hayven and slowly begins to adapt to the whole new world of opportunities and friends that have almost magically appeared before her eyes. Gifted is a marvelous contemporary fantasy that is meticulously plotted and well-written. It's one of those books that grabs the reader and doesn't let go until the last page, and then only after promising that there's much more to be learned in the following volume. Gifted: The Hayven Series, Book One is most highly recommended.
