Glowy and the Misunderstood Shark: The Sparkling Adventures of Glowy the Fish by A. K. Smith is the story of a little fish called Glowy, who lives in the Sea of Cortez with her friends. She returns home after an adventure and starts dancing with her friends. They are soon interrupted by a huge shark. While her friends hide in the coral, Glowy freezes. She had never seen a shark up close before. As he gets closer, she sees another shark being mean to him for not eating the fish while he has the chance. Glowy decides to be brave and befriends the shark. He is a vegetarian and does not like to eat fish. He has never had a friend before either. Glowy is determined to change that.
A. K. Smith has written an educational and delightful tale with Glowy and the Misunderstood Shark. I had no idea that sharks could be vegetarian. The author has created a well-written story that entertains but also gives children information on aquatic life. I liked that she also encourages children to clean up after themselves on the beach to prevent further pollution in the waters. Showing the impact it can have is an excellent way of getting through to youngsters. There is also a good message here about the importance of giving people a chance, even if they look big and scary. I think that young readers in the 5-8 age range would enjoy this book. The illustrations are great and there is a lot of humor in it too. I would recommend this book.
