In Led by the Child: Unlocking the Power of Montessori for All, Karen Chetwynd, CEO of Montessori Global Education, argues that this method should not be reserved only for wealthy families but is a right every child deserves. This book is structured around a very simple thesis: follow the child. It explores four missions: make the Montessori teaching style available everywhere, illustrate its impact on every child, build skills in parents and teachers, and make children feel seen and heard in their learning journeys. Each problem is paired with a fix. Problems are thin research, unheard students, divided stakeholders, and elitist images. The fix prioritizes observation over testing, principles over rituals, and co-creation with kids.
Parents and teachers will discover and learn skills that enable them to help their kids discover their best and build on it. They will understand their role as the child’s first teachers, and small moments such as buying carrots, tying a shoe, or pouring water become avenues for learning and growth. Karen Chetwynd fills the book with compelling stories that have strong lessons for readers, such as a Croatian town hit by an earthquake, a struggling Manchester school, and a volunteer program for new mothers. These stories help parents gain insight and skills to deal with challenging situations way beyond the classroom.
