Goddess from the Machine by Daniel Rodrigues-Martin is an ingeniously plotted and beautifully narrated sci-fi fantasy set in a dystopian world where tech-enhanced heroism collides with oppression. It follows Reese, a skilled machinist and former slave, who encounters Kid, an enigmatic character with extraordinary powers. Together, they navigate the treacherous streets of Machindoun, a city defined by its exploitation of the weak and systematic corruption. Once Kid leaves to fight injustice, Reese struggles with her identity and the legacy of their shared mission while aiming for her future as a Guild apprentice. The narrative intertwines their battles against human trafficking and personal demons. Can exploitation and corruption be stopped in this city reeling with chaos?

The characters reveal multiple layers. Reese makes readers think about resilience and fierce opposition to injustice. Her backstory is cleverly designed to reveal a character who hates slavery and human trafficking. Kid portrays a morally ambiguous hero whose powers amplify vulnerability, leading to an inner conflict regarding the cost of justice. Their relationship reflects themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the personal toll of heroism. The worldbuilding is impeccably accomplished, and Daniel Rodrigues-Martin offers perfect images of the oppressive machinery and labyrinthine streets of Machindoun. The world is a blend of crumbling industry and stark social disparity. The Under City is a location for refuge and an emblem of the cycles of exploitation. The omnipresence of technology—liberating and constricting—mirrors the characters’ quests for freedom against political control. This novel has what I look for in a dystopian narrative: a good setting, chaos, and heroes rising against the bad guys. The writing is top-notch, filled with descriptive passages and engaging dialogues, and the characters are memorable. Fans of vigilante literature with well-drawn settings will adore Goddess from the Machine.
